Overview

Tech support scam using fake virus warnings and browser pop-ups to frighten victims into calling. Pop-ups claim the computer is infected and lock the browser, displaying urgent warnings with a phone number to call for "Microsoft Support."

Operators falsely claim Microsoft affiliation, request remote access via TeamViewer or AnyDesk, then "find" non-existent problems including fake viruses, hackers, or compromised accounts. Charges hundreds of dollars for unnecessary "repairs" or ongoing "protection plans."

Often installs actual malware during the remote session. Primarily targets elderly and non-technical users. Prefers payment via gift cards (which are untraceable) or direct bank transfers. Call centers likely located offshore.
